1980s Black and White Street Dance Cypher

An authentic black and white street photograph from 1983, shot from a high balcony looking down at six or seven street dancers gathered in a loose, uneven circle (a cypher) on a worn city street. In the center, a B-Boy is frozen in a one-handed handstand freeze: his entire body is inverted and balanced on a single hand pressed flat on the ground, the supporting arm straight, his other arm raised high with the hand open, his torso twisted diagonally, both knees bent with the legs folded and crossed in the air, head tucked close to the supporting arm and turned sideways. He wears a baggy tracksuit, a plain knit beanie and plain white sneakers with no logos or stripes. Beneath him lies a large flattened cardboard sheet, about one and a half times larger than a normal dance mat, clearly visible as a big pale rectangle with generous empty margin around the dancer, its edges slightly curled and scuffed. The surrounding five or six onlookers all stand differently and look natural and candid: one leaning back with arms crossed, one bent forward with hands on knees, one clapping with a big laugh, one pointing at the center, one with hands cupped around his mouth cheering, one sitting on a low stoop or crate, one with a hand on a friend's shoulder. Different heights, different weight shifts, some facing the center, some turning to talk to a neighbor. Early 1980s street clothing: tracksuits, bucket hats, flat caps, bomber jackets, high-top sneakers, no visible logos. A boombox on the ground at the edge of the circle. Bird's-eye high-angle view from a moderate distance so the central pose stays clearly readable, long soft shadows on the pavement, old brick building edges at the borders, an out-of-focus iron balcony railing in the extreme foreground corner.
